I’ve met a lot of crazy people in New York City, but none more crazy then a man named Cameron Moore. I ran into him while taking a house dance class at PMT studio, and man, would he make an impression on me. After learning how to groove to house music in an unconventional way where everyone in the class held shoulders and ‘bobbed’ to the beat; I was hooked.
5 classes later I find not only is Cam a smooth(not lazy) house dancer, but a Bboy, dance judge, DJ, web developer, illustrator, photographer, web radio host, and about a hundred other things. But most of all to me and many of the younger dancers and artists; he’s a guru (or Yoda as we like to call him).
“Urban culture is youth culture. The young are what push and move the culture forward. It is interesting to see the new things they come up with and create. That is the main thing I always take from the culture is to keep moving forward while understanding what came before.”
Formally known as ‘Mookie’, Cam is now actively co-hosting ‘The Table of Truth’ podcast which just recently ended their 2nd season. He’s also dancing, DJing, and passing on his urban knowledge wherever he goes. I’ve never met someone with so much ‘Creative A.D.D.’ as he puts so well. Cam is someone who has not only inspired and helped me in so many ways, but others around me who i’ve seen first hand.
“I think taking the word “urban” and have it not associated with “unprofessional”. I think traditional arts do not believe urban arts has evolved. It has but still has a way to go to make it viable and self sustaining on a national level. Urban arts are well respected as culture in other countries but in America it is still regarded as a fad, trend,or hobby. So, I would like to help change that perspective and show people that we are just as intelligent, knowledgeable, and professional about our urban culture as they are with their traditional art culture.”
One of the greatest things in the urban culture is the passing of knowledge, it’s very prevalent and it’s what keeps such an underground world alive. You can keep up with Cam at www.IamMookie.com
